Brett Lawrie, 2008 First Round Pick

#13 Brett Lawrie, 2nd baseman. Born January 18th, 1990 in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Brett Lawrie will be making his professional debut in 2009. That certainly doesn't mean he doesn't bring experience to the table. Selected with the 16th overall pick in the June '08 draft, Brett spent his summer playing for the Canadian Junior National team. He then went on to play for the Canadian Olympic team and followed that by being named to the Canadian World Baseball Class roster. (click here to view Lawrie's first Olympics at bat)

As the 16th overall selection, Lawrie became the highest picked position player in Canadian history. He brings a big power bat and plenty of praise to a premium position. Rated the #3 prospect in the organization and #81 in all of baseball by Baseball America, Lawrie will start the season playing second base for the Timber Rattlers, but be sure you come out early to see him play this season. His bat is already considered to be ready for MLB duty. Should he prove himself defensively, his stay in Appleton will be short-lived. Lawrie will most likely be on the fast track through the minors, which means he could be gone as early as July.
